Dr. Sleep (2019)
Doctor sleep
horrors
Director: Mike Flanegan
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Jacob Tremblay, Emily Eileen Lind, Cliff Curtis
Premiere: November 7, 2019
Having grown up, Danny Torrance, having survived a number of nightmarish events at the Overlook Hotel many years ago, is trying to escape as far as possible from the past. In this, Danny helps strong alcohol (drowning out “radiance”), however, here his life rolls into the abyss. But here’s an old ghostly friend Dick Halloran establishes a connection with the main character and helps him crawl out of alcoholic depression. Danny begins a new life, uses force for good, and even makes a “shining” pen pal. And everything seems to be going fine until the girl is noticed by the leader of the True Knot, Rose-in-the-Hat, who, along with her fellow tribesmen, feeds on the “radiance” of gifted children. Danny understands that his girlfriend needs to be saved, and for this he will have to deal with the ghosts of the past.

A lot of hope was assigned to the sequel “Shining”, horror director Mike Flanegan seemed to fit the job as a resume: he had already filmed King and the “Ghosts of the House on the Hill” like nothing. But there was clearly something wrong with Doctor Sleep. One can understand the difficult situation, one must immediately manage not to anger the fans of the Kubrick film and serve the members of the “Book better” club, in this case it is very easy to lose balance. It seems that the attempt to play on two fronts played a requiem for the film. Timing of two and a half hours can hardly be justified, most of the story is devoted to the protagonist’s struggle with addiction, but it is so boring and moralizing that you are sitting at a meeting of anonymous alcoholics and waiting for it to end.

Why step by step to re-take the best moments from Kubrick’s Shining, if you are not Kubrick, it’s not clear at all. Trying to play your favorite director turned into an unsuccessful imitation, especially when you consider how far the visual style of Doctor Sleep is far from Radiance. These fragments are obsessively trying to put pressure on nostalgic feelings: they say, “and remember how cool it was when Jack Nicholson broke the door with an ax, the beauty,” and they hardly fit into the general mood of the picture. Therefore, in the end, “Doctor Dream” becomes a real horror film, not even because of the general atmosphere and scenes of eating the flesh, but because you are terrified of what is happening on the screen.

If the same “Radiance” without jump-skeras or any cheap horror paraphernalia played on the nerves of the viewer, like Antonio Banderas on the guitar in “Desperate”, then “Doctor Sleep” did not have the ingenuity to create at least some degree of tension in the hall . The ghost in the bathroom (which by its fifth appearance is already genuinely bored) has more screen time than Jacob Tramble, and each encounter with him is more likely to cause an awkward laugh than a subcutaneous tremor. With the other inhabitants of the Overluk Hotel, however, the story is similar, they, like your old classmates, are still battered by life, but earlier they caused more horror.

The only bright spot in this costume party is the incredible Rebekah Ferguson. Her Rose-in-Hat is half the charisma of the entire film, the actress has made her antagonist so lively and attractive that without hesitation she wants to go to the dark side, if only to spend more time with her. Although Ewan McGregor and rising star Kylie Curran also did a great job with their roles, their images will disappear from their heads the next day, unlike the brilliant Ferguson.

Flanegan was lucky in a way, Stephen King hated the film adaptation of Radiance, and the Doctor supported Doctor Dream before the box office, saying a few kind words to him. It may be a matter of promotion, but I sincerely hope that King has closed his Kubrickovsky gestalt, but the viewer, most likely, on the contrary, will now have to clear himself of what he saw.
