No one pity, life is a big dump: Review of the second season of the series “End *** th world”

The end of the *** th world (2017)
The End of the F *** ing World
drama, comedy, romance, adventure, thriller
Directors: Jonathan Entwistle, Lucy Chernyak, Destiny Ekaraga, Lucy Forbes
Cast: Jessica Barden, Alex Lawther, Steve Oram, Christine Bottomley, Naveen Chowdhury
Two years have passed since the events of the first season. Alyssa and her family moved to the British wilderness, works as a waitress and prepares for an imminent wedding. Everyone seems to be happy, but the girl, on the contrary, is sad: she constantly remembers the trip with James and wonders what happened to him in the end. A measured life and wedding bustle are violated by a letter with a cartridge on which the name of Alyssa is scratched, and a stalker who watches the girl around the clock.

The second season of “The End of the *** th World” is easiest to compare with the recent film “El Camino: Breaking Bad” – this is the same unnecessary attempt to turn the dot into ellipses and bring the open finale to a level line. The audience was well aware that Jesse was likely to run away from the police and start a new life, and James would not die on the beach. However, the sudden popularity of the series about teenage misanthropes forced the show runner to go beyond the original source (graphic novel of the same name) and figure out what could happen to the characters after the finale of the first season.

The problem is that the new episodes do not offer an integral continuation of the series, something like the second chapter – it is rather an epilogue the size of a season and just prank, out of control to the delight of the fans. The finale of the first season was the perfect conclusion to the history of Alyssa and James – the heroes went through abyuze, hatred of themselves and others, and in the end they realized that man really needs a man. However, the creators themselves are ironic over the continuation through replicas of James, who recalls the events of that day: “It was a suitable ending. A story of doomed love. The perfect tragedy. And then I did not die. ” And really sorry that I did not die.

The new season opens an episode that seems to expand the universe of the series – the creators do not seek to reveal the fate of James and Alyssa, instead they show the story of a girl named Bonnie. A difficult childhood with a tyrant mother, misconceptions about love and a desire to break the rules lead her to an abusive relationship with professor and writer Clive Koch. Because of jealousy, she goes to prison, where she finds out that her lover was killed by James and Alyssa. Her revenge could be an excellent plot trigger for the season, she would push the heroes with the consequences of their rash actions. However, the creators chose a safe route that they went in the first season, and sent the heroes along the beaten paths with an escape and accidental killing, but already three, with Bonnie.

Of course, the new season still looks like a bang – it’s the same depressing and dynamic story about edgy teenagers, only without snot and absolutely ridiculous cues in the style of Normal people scare me or I’m weird. The long-awaited holiday on the street of fans who relate to the heroes, but for people who have had enough of one season, new episodes seem like just parasitism on the legacy and chewing on old ideas. However, the worst, it seems, is ahead of us – the series will most likely have a third season.
