Downton Abbey (2019)
Downton abbey
drama
Director: Michael Engler
Cast: Michelle Dockery, Matthew Goode, Tuppence Middleton, Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern
Premiere: November 21, 2019
The silverware shines, the fireplace in the living room is divorced, the maids brushed off the last dust from the openwork railings, the dresses were delivered from the city, and the footmen’s shoes were polished to a shine: at the Downton Abbey, the most high-ranking guests, the royal couple, are preparing for the arrival. On the calendar, 1927, and therefore on the throne, George V, the grandfather of the reign of Elizabeth II.

The events of the series, the continuation of which was a full meter, originate on April 15, 1912: “Titanic” went to the bottom of the Atlantic and took the lives of heirs of the abbey, who ended up on the ill-fated flight. For the next twelve years in Downton, Messrs. Crowley and their servants (it’s not clear who is in charge of this house) disputed the order of succession, married and terminated engagements, died and were born, experienced reputation scandals, World War I, were imprisoned, fought for the main prizes at the orchid fair, mastered electricity and even telephone communications – it took six whole seasons to figure it out.

Julian Fellows, the permanent screenwriter and showrunner of Downton Abbey, said goodbye to his characters at the New Year tree on the eve of 1926, leaving them in good health and full of hope for reconciliation with imminent progress. And now, almost 5 years after the final, they returned. To say that this is the first full meter for “Abbey” means a little trick – Fellows repeatedly pleased fans of the series with Christmas special episodes that are hardly different from the film, except that they did not see large screens. From the moment you receive a letter from Buckingham Palace to the gala dinner, there are only two weeks, and you have to make it all: not only the characters are in a hurry, but the movie makers themselves – the concentration of events and micro-incidents for a minute of running time is off-scale, it seems that they would have been enough for at least one more season . Slow and measured series was the subject of endless jokes, but this time the viewer can hardly catch his breath: each new plot twist comes on the heels of the previous scene, as if they rushing headlong to the race captions.

The saga of the Crowley family can be called too predictable and moderately naive, but much more appropriate to appeal to traditions: around the clash of a bygone Victorian era and England of the new century, all battles are being built under the roof of the house. Technological progress and the industrial revolution are equally traumatic and ruthless to everyone: the farmer and the count. Capitalism has to get along with the monarchy, the nobility is losing its former privilege, marriages are becoming more unequal, and the maid can become a mistress in a “decent house”. Having designated such a head-on collision, Fellows expertly juggles with stereotypes, turning them inside out, and endlessly forces the heroes to choose: keep up with the times or be faithful to the traditional way of life? A full-length film hardly takes a step away from the intended course, only aggravates the poles.

Downton Abbey – for those who have already been to the estate, is like returning home after a long absence, where everything is as before: the Dowager Countess Grantham (inimitable Maggie Smith, who, in view of the large screens, can count on more impressive rewards) is explained entirely by printed aphorisms, sisters Crowley clings to each other under the mother’s futile attempts to calm them down, Mrs. Patmore is busy in the kitchen, and the younger generation is playing with the nanny in the garden to the accompaniment of that music, which is easy to guess from three notes. The familiar and familiar course of things turns the royal couple’s visit into chaos: here the boiler didn’t work out of order, and the dress ordered in the catalog is not the same size, the monarch’s annoying retinue gets underfoot, preventing the servants from commanding in their own house. Fellows is true to his reversible irony of “who is the boss here.” Those who find themselves in Downton Abbey for the first time will receive a horse dose of an injection of the best traditions of the series. Sparkling outfits, luxurious interiors where you can see every lens on the chandelier in the dining room, a gradation of humor in the estate, British etiquette and, of course, dancing – all this will swirl past the viewer in a whirlwind. However, they did not forget about him: the new guests in the house will not be too lazy to explain who is who and how the driver became the master.

The main merit of Fellows in the words and persons with which he composes historical changes. Humanizing the era, he does not pass sentences, does not seek morality, except for everyday kindness and honor, but only ironizes manners and habits, but is there a universe where England is possible without traditions? Not only at the beginning of the century, but today: the filming of the film was visited by the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, and the whole group in unison sings that it was both the most difficult and the best day
