Last year’s snow was falling

A relatively successful sequel, which turns out to be more fun, larger and more interesting than the original, but losing its originality.

Cast: Jason Ritter, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, Evan Rachel Wood, Idina Menzel
Premiere: November 28, 2019
Three years have passed since the last adventure of the two princesses of Arendelle. Girls lead a measured life in the palace, rule the kingdom, arrange balls and spend evenings with old friends Kristoff, Sven and Olaf. But while happy Anna sings sugary songs of love and peace every day, Elsa asks endless existential questions about herself and her past. Once the suffering of the room philosopherine is rewarded: she hears a strange, but painfully familiar voice and, hoping to get answers, decides to go to his call. And with her – and bosom friends who are still afraid to let Elsa go alone.

The first part of Frozen told a rather modest story about the relationship between two different sisters. Her entire conflict was built on the contrast of the sensible and in all senses cold sorceress Elsa, out of well-intentioned estranged from her relatives, and infantile cheerful Anna, desperately in need of sisterly care after the death of her parents. He decided, however, quickly and conveniently: it turns out that in order to establish contact lost a few years ago and live happily ever after, you just have to find an escaped relative, tell a little truth and defeat the cunning villain. “Frozen 2” is moving away from local family issues and goes into the jungle of timeless questions.

According to the precepts of the second parts, the sequel is trying to become larger, more beautiful and more fun than its predecessor. Where previously from the locations there were only rows of white ice blocks and endless expanses of snow, now there is a colorful enchanted forest, where there is no path, then a new landscape, and instead of a small personal history, there are heavy problems of historical memory, civilization and the connection of man with nature. Such gigantization of all the advantages of the original is doubtful: an increase in the scale of events here inevitably leads to the fact that simple but distinctive conflicts replace universal generalized moral teachings, which could just as well migrate to another franchise.

“Frozen 2” looks like an optional afterword, when there is nothing to say, but you need to invent it. Therefore, the heroes have no choice but to initiate template functions uninitially to create the illusion of their need. Kristoff – from time to time clumsy to start a conversation about the engagement, Anna – on the heels of following her sister and in the end to understand that it is time to let her go, and Elsa – tearfully lamenting about her heavy burden before achieving an independent harmonious life.

And although “Frozen 2” supplements the first part in the same way as all the old Disney sequels coming out in direct-to-video format complement the originals, his insistent desire to be spectacular gives the desired effect. Technically, this is perhaps one of the best cartoons of recent years: expressive, filled with bright colors and creating unforgettable fantastic locations that sometimes were so lacking in the restrained setting of the first film. However, when the original story gradually loses its original appearance, and then, apparently, it will only get worse, it’s better to get ready to use Elsa’s most important everyday advice – to let go and forget. Unless the animators save again.
